Akadimia Platonos scores 24 out of 100 for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 33,051 people at 16,579 people per km².

The neighbourhood wrapped around the excavated site of Plato's Academy, between Lenorman and Athinon Avenue. It is a mixed industrial-residential patchwork — workshops, car dealerships, warehouses and apartment blocks — that grew after the war with no regard for what was underneath it. The archaeological grove is the only real green space for the surrounding districts, and a long-running programme to turn it into a proper archaeological park with a new Museum of the City of Athens is the area's one big hope.
The park is unlit and unstaffed after dark and the surrounding industrial streets have almost no footfall; this is a daytime visit only, and that has been true for years.
Not a place to book unless you are here for a specific reason. Buses rather than metro, long connections to the sights, and an evening street scene that does not exist.
Reputation against reality. Worth visiting by day — it is a genuine classical site with almost no crowds, free, and ten minutes from Kolonos. The warnings attach to the hours when it is deserted, not to the visit.
