Κάτω Πατήσια · District

Modelled estimate — how it is made
15/100

By type of crime

Kato Patisia scores 15 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for property crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Kato Patisia has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 28 for property crime — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Kato Patisia. An estimated 5,906 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Kato Patisia is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

A dense working- to middle-class district that grew along Patision and Acharnon and was built out hard in the 1950s to 80s. It was hit unusually badly by the crisis: shop closures along Acharnon, property values down sharply, an eleven per cent population fall between the two censuses. It has an active Saturday street market and one of the city's older squatted plots at Patmou and Karavia, run as a cultural park.

After dark

Acharnon and Patision stay lit and trafficked, but the cross-streets go dead and shuttered early; this is the stretch where street robbery reporting concentrates.

What to watch for

  • Chain-snatching at Kato Patisia ISAP station — one of the stations worked by the gang broken up with 21 arrests over 129 cases
  • Street robberies and break-ins reported in Kato Patisia alongside Sepolia and Kolonos, with DIAS patrols as the stated response
  • Forged-document workshops reported in Kato Patisia and on 3is Septemvriou
  • Empty, shuttered stretches of Acharnon and the side streets off it after shop-closing

Staying here

Not recommended. The flats are cheap and the ISAP puts you at Omonia in ten minutes, but there is no visitor infrastructure, and the last five minutes on foot are the ones that go wrong.

Reputation against reality. Genuinely a normal dense neighbourhood by day, with schools, markets and a real Saturday laiki. The 'ghetto' framing in some Greek press overstates it; the honest version is a district that lost its commerce and has not got it back.
