Patisia scores 34 out of 100 for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 12,059 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
Less a neighbourhood than a 4.5-kilometre axis — Patision, officially 28is Oktovriou — running from the Polytechnic north through Victoria, Amerikis and Koliatsou to Ano Patisia. It carries the National Archaeological Museum, ASOEE, old cinemas and department stores, and hundreds of thousands of residents in the blocks either side. Its character changes every few hundred metres: the southern kilometre behaves like Omonia, the northern half like an ordinary outer district.
The rule of thumb locals use is that the lower kilometre between Omonia and Pedion tou Areos is the problem and it normalises as you go north past Victoria; after midnight the side streets off Patision are the risk, not the avenue.
A poor first-trip choice and a defensible long-stay one. Hotels near the Archaeological Museum work if you are visiting it; anything south of Victoria puts you in the part everyone warns about.
Reputation against reality. Blanket 'avoid Patisia' advice is too crude to be useful. A visitor walking Patision at 11am to the Archaeological Museum is doing something completely normal; the same person on Fylis at 2am is not.
