Ano Patisia scores 18 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for violent crime — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Ano Patisia has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 23 for violent crime — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Ano Patisia. An estimated 13,594 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Ano Patisia is actually like
The northern end of the Patision axis, where the city thins towards Nea Ionia and Galatsi. It began as an out-of-town settlement reached by tram and steam railway, industrialised early with the Drakopoulou wool mill and the Fix ice-cream works, and kept villas and estates that are now listed and mostly decaying. Next to it is Kypriadou, a 1920s-30s garden suburb of two-storey villas once lived in by writers and architects, still one of the pleasantest pockets in north Athens.
After dark
Ordinary residential evenings — ISAP running, bakeries and tavernas open on the main streets, nothing on the side roads. Noticeably calmer than Kato Patisia.
What to watch for
- The Patision axis itself, which carries the district's share of street crime as you go south
- Degrading listed buildings and closed estates with no surveillance
- Poverty and school-level social problems documented around the large Gravas school complex
Staying here
Workable for a long stay or a family visit: quieter, greener toward Kypriadou, ISAP to the centre in about twenty minutes. Still not a holiday base — you are a long way from anything a first-time visitor came for.
Reputation against reality. Lumped in with 'Patisia' in avoid-lists, which is unfair to this end of it: Kypriadou in particular is a conservation-grade garden suburb, not a problem district.
