What Agios Artemios is actually like
Agios Artemios — older name Gouva — is the dense, unglamorous stretch around the church on Filolaou, sitting between Mets, Pangrati, Vyronas, Ymittos, Dafni and Neos Kosmos. It is grey post-war apartment blocks with genuine neighbourhood texture: barbers, bakeries, souvlaki shops, an old-fashioned patisserie. Residents often just say they live in Pangrati because it is simpler than explaining.
After dark
Calm and residential, with what life there is concentrated on Filolaou and around Plateia Delioli. Its old reputation for thieves belongs to a much smaller Athens and no longer describes the place.
What to watch for
- Long, dim residential blocks off Filolaou with little foot traffic once the shops shut
- Plateia Delioli is described in Greek local reporting as poorly maintained
- A 35-40 minute walk or a bus to the tourist centre, so late returns are not a simple stroll
Staying here
A fair budget alternative to Pangrati if you accept a longer walk and a plainer street. It is not somewhere to book for a short first trip, but it works for a month-long stay.
