Rigillis violent crime

Ρηγίλλης · district

31/100

Rigillis scores 31 out of 100 for violent crimeabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 1,904 people at 16,579 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Rigillis is actually like

A good place to stayQuiet and well-lit, and the sort of place most visitors are pointed to.

Rigillis is barely a neighbourhood — it is a short, grand street and its surroundings between Kolonaki, the National Garden and Vasilissis Sofias, holding the Athens Conservatory, the Army General Staff compound and some of the most expensive addresses in the city. There are almost no shops and very few residents relative to its footprint; it is embassies, ministries, institutions and a great deal of protected greenery.

After dark

Silent and heavily watched. Military and diplomatic security means a permanent uniformed presence and good lighting on every approach. There is nowhere to eat late, so you walk into Kolonaki or down to Syntagma.

What to watch for

  • Standing military and diplomatic security around the Army General Staff compound — do not photograph the installations
  • Nothing open for food or help after about 9pm; the nearest late-night streets are in Kolonaki
  • Protests and marches on Vasilissis Sofias periodically close the area and draw riot police

Staying here

If you can afford it, this is as safe and central as Athens gets, with Syntagma, the Zappeion, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis all walkable. The wrong choice if you want life on your doorstep.

Reputation against reality. Best thought of as the institutional edge of Kolonaki rather than a district in its own right; safety commentary about Kolonaki applies to it directly.
