Pangrati is the classic middle-class Athens neighbourhood with an artistic streak — Seferis and Hatzidakis lived here — and it is now the district most often recommended to visitors who want somewhere real. It wraps around the Panathenaic Stadium and the First Cemetery, and its life runs through a chain of squares: Plastira, Varnava, Proskopon, Mesologgiou and the Sintrivani.
Busy and well-peopled around Archelaou, Plateia Varnava and Plateia Proskopon until late, quiet but comfortable on the residential streets in between. The genuine night problem here is noise, not crime.
The best default recommendation in eastern Athens: safe, about 25 minutes' walk to the Acropolis, and thick with places to eat. Book near a square if you want life, a street or two back if you want to sleep.
Reputation against reality. Its one recurring complaint is gentrification and late-night noise around the redeveloped squares, not personal safety. Travellers asking 'is Pangrati safe' on forums are consistently told yes.
