Papastratos scores 37 out of 100 for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 12,394 people at 13,556 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
The old industrial belt west of the centre, also called Agios Dionysios after its church, named for the Papastratos tobacco factory that opened on Mavromichali in 1931. It sits between Levka to the east and Kopi to the west. Long the most run-down quarter in the city, it is now the site of the largest regeneration in Piraeus: the factory is offices, with a hotel, museum and residences planned.
Still mostly warehouses, freight yards and building sites after dark, with very few people on the street between the completed blocks. The lighting and pavement works are real but incomplete, so improvement is patchy.
New hotel stock is arriving and the commercial port is close, but it remains a construction zone with poor pedestrian links to the passenger gates. Choose the port blocks or Terpsithea for a ferry morning.
Reputation against reality. Here reputation lags reality in the visitor's favour: the district Greek press called downgraded is being rebuilt, and the change is documented and ongoing rather than speculative.
