Kaminia violent crime

Καμίνια · district

23/100

Kaminia scores 23 out of 100 for violent crimeabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 11,109 people at 13,556 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Kaminia is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkNormal by day and worth visiting. What changes after dark is specific and avoidable rather than general.

Old kiln country between Piraeus Street and Thivon, next to Neo Faliro and the electric railway, 2.5km from the centre. Streets are named after Aegean islands, after the island labourers who came for the ceramics works and stayed. Plateia Nikou Legaki is the meeting point, Agiou Eleftheriou the commercial axis. Professionals priced out of Neo Faliro have been moving in.

After dark

Neighbourly on the main streets and around the square; the older grid west of Agiou Eleftheriou is poorly lit. Piraeus-wide, police broke up a gang of minors in January 2025 that had robbed elderly residents at home, and another in November 2025 that robbed teenagers on scooters.

Staying here

Cheap, authentic and liveable, but with little for visitors and an awkward link to the gates. Choose it for a week in the city, not a night before a boat.

Reputation against reality. Kaminia's long-standing name as the most run-down part of Piraeus comes from its swampy, cheap-land origins, not from present-day conditions; press coverage since 2024 treats it as a neighbourhood on the way up.
