Zea (Pasalimani) scores 37 out of 100 for violent crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 7,540 people at 13,556 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
The yacht harbour and the busiest going-out quarter in Piraeus: all-day cafe-bars, restaurants and live bouzouki venues around Marina Zea and Akti Moutsopoulou, plus the Archaeological and Maritime museums. Prosperous, well-policed, full of locals rather than tourists, and walkable to Dimotiko Theatro metro.
Crowded and lit until very late, with the usual friction around big venues. The one serious documented event is daytime: on 14 June 2024 an armed clash inside a supermarket at Akti Moutsopoulou 48 left one man dead and one seriously injured, with an arrest nearby; police called it a settling of scores, not a robbery.
A good compromise: real restaurants, a safe walk home, and 15-20 minutes on foot or one short taxi from the gates. The best of the pleasant options for an early sailing, though the port itself is closer.
Reputation against reality. Zea reads as the safe, smart side of Piraeus and largely is; the 2024 supermarket shooting was targeted and has not changed how the area is used.
