What Mets is actually like
Mets is a small, steep, leafy pocket between the Panathenaic Stadium, the First Cemetery and Neos Kosmos, full of pre-war and 1930s houses, marble sculpture workshops on Anapafseos and a handful of wine bars and tavernas. It is quieter and more architectural than Pangrati, with only a scattering of shops, and is sometimes called the Montmartre of Athens.
After dark
Very quiet. The streets are narrow, sloping and thinly lit, but residential throughout with almost no through traffic. Markou Mousourou is the main way in and out and stays reasonably lit.
What to watch for
- Narrow, steep, thinly lit residential streets with uneven paving — the main risk is a fall, not a person
- The First Cemetery perimeter is gated and unlit after closing, making the streets alongside it feel dead at night
- Very few shops or late-night businesses, so long stretches with nowhere open to step into
Staying here
Excellent for couples and older travellers: central, calm, ten minutes from the Zappeion and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. A poor choice for anyone who wants nightlife downstairs, and hard work if you dislike hills.
Reputation against reality. The First Cemetery on its doorstep puts some visitors off, but it functions as green space and an open-air sculpture museum, and is closed and gated at night.
