The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. The northern suburb and municipal unit at the narrows of the gulf, dominated by three things: the Rio-Antirrio bridge, the University of Patras campus with its halls of residence, and the university hospital. That makes it the busiest part of greater Patras outside the centre — thousands of students, a full hospital catchment, a ferry crossing, a Venetian castle, and a coastal strip of cafes, beach bars and clubs that is where Patras goes out in summer. It is about 7-8 km from the centre. Against Kastelokampos next door it is livelier and far more transient; against the inner city it is younger, more spread out and much greener.
The seafront strip is one of the liveliest places in the region on summer nights, with cafes and clubs running late; the campus and hospital keep activity going year-round. Away from those, the lanes and the ground between campus and coast are dark and empty. Reported problems are thefts and attacks around the campus rather than on the seafront.
Good if you are here for the university, the hospital or the bridge, with plenty of hotels and apartments along the coast, and pleasant in summer. Wrong end of the city for an early Italy ferry: the South Port gates are roughly 11-12 km away, so budget a taxi and real time.
Reputation against reality. Rio reads as the safe, modern, student end of Patras, and for street safety that is broadly right. Its documented crime is property crime: campus thefts and burglaries of coastal houses.
