Modelled estimate — how it is made
62/100

By type of crime

Kato Kastritsi scores 62 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Kato Kastritsi has no police figures of its own. Its estimate is Patras's rate — Patras scores 51 for overall safety — and the 11 points between them come from how the model shares Patras's total out, not from anything measured in Kato Kastritsi. It is home to about 1,046 people (2021 census).

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Kato Kastritsi is actually like

Ordinary precautionsThe usual precautions apply. The note lists anything specific to this place.

A community of the Rio municipal unit built on the foothills of Mount Panachaiko at 96 m, bordering Rio, the University of Patras and Ano Kastritsi, about 8 km in a straight line from Plateia Georgiou in central Patras. It had 798 residents at the 2021 census: 545 in Kato Kastritsi, founded in the early 20th century by families from Ano Kastritsi, and 253 in Magoula, settled around the Second World War. A hillside settlement of detached houses with views over the gulf, part of the university's residential hinterland. City bus 608 passes through Magoula on its way up to Ano Kastritsi, and the nearest street market in the municipal regulation is Rio's, on Tuesday mornings. It has one documented crime link: one of two men arrested in June 2026 over a burglary series was tied to break-ins here.

After dark

Quiet and dark on the hillside lanes, with no late footfall. The documented risk is burglary of houses, not street crime.

What to watch for

  • Residential burglary — one arrested gang member was linked to 12 break-ins in Rio and Kato Kastritsi in 2024-25
  • Isolated hillside houses; unlit approach lanes

Staying here

Reasonable and quiet if you are here for the university and have a car. Far from the Italy ferry gates, so not a base for an early sailing.
