Ilisia crime and safety

Iλίσια · district

33/100

Ilisia scores 33 out of 100 for overall safetyabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 19,866 people at 16,579 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Ilisia is actually like

A good place to stayQuiet and well-lit, and the sort of place most visitors are pointed to.

Ilisia runs east from the Hilton and Evangelismos metro towards Goudi and Zografou, taking its name from the buried Ilisos river. The lower part is embassy, museum and hotel ground — the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the War Museum, the National Gallery and the Athens Concert Hall are all on or near its edge — while the upper part shades into student housing by the university campus. It is green, quiet and firmly middle-class.

After dark

Well lit and unremarkable along Vasilissis Sofias and around the Hilton, sleepier and emptier as you climb east. The student side has ordinary late bar noise rather than trouble.

What to watch for

  • Pickpocketing on Metro Line 3 at Evangelismos and Megaro Moussikis, the two busiest stations serving the area
  • Emptier, sleepier streets on the climb east towards Goudi and the university campus late at night
  • Ordinary late-night bar noise on the Ano Ilisia student side rather than any safety issue

Staying here

One of the better quiet choices in eastern Athens: on Metro Line 3, walkable to Kolonaki, about 25 minutes from the Acropolis. Suits families, older travellers, business visitors and anyone who prefers calm to atmosphere.

Reputation against reality. Sometimes lumped in with 'the hospital area' because Evangelismos hospital sits at its western gate. No documented pattern of crime around the hospital zone could be found in Greek press or police material.
