Kolonos scores 9 out of 100 for overall safety — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 6,510 people at 16,579 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
A dense working-class district northwest of the centre, named for the ancient Hippios Kolonos of Sophocles and rebuilt wholesale as apartment blocks in the 1960s and 70s. It has real civic life — neighbourhood assemblies, four amateur football clubs, the open-air Epi Kolono theatre, the restored Public Tobacco Factory used for exhibitions — alongside closed shopfronts and a tired building stock. Poverty and drug problems concentrate toward the lower Lenorman end.
The commercial streets go quiet early and the hill park above is not a place to be after dark; residents have reported people under the influence, knife incidents and phone robberies around the encampment at the old Kapralos cafe.
Not for visitors. It is a lived-in neighbourhood with cheap rents, thirty-plus minutes from the Acropolis, no tourist infrastructure and a name that will worry anyone who reads Greek news.
Reputation against reality. This is the sharpest case of reputation outrunning geography in Athens. The 2022 rape of a 12-year-old girl, prosecuted nationally as 'the Kolonos case', attached a whole district's name to one man's crimes, and a further procuring case in 2024 renewed it. Neither says anything about a visitor's risk walking down Lenorman; the district's actual daily problems are poverty, drugs at the lower end and an abandoned hill park.
