Sepolia scores 14 out of 100 (modelled estimate, Eurostat 2021–2024) for overall safety — high crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. Sepolia has no police figures of its own. Its estimate starts from Athens's rate — Athens scores 25 for overall safety — and is adjusted for documented local reporting about Sepolia. An estimated 11,172 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Sepolia is actually like
An unpretentious residential neighbourhood on Metro Line 2, four stops from Omonia, built out from the 1960s by families moving in from the Greek provinces and formalised in the 1970s; the metro arriving in 2000 lifted it noticeably. It is best known outside Greece as where Giannis Antetokounmpo grew up, and the municipal sports centre has a court named after him. Agios Meletios church and square are the social centre; the Votris factory site sits abandoned nearby.
After dark
Normal residential quiet rather than nightlife: lit main streets, people about until late on Agiou Meletiou, and no particular reason to be on the tracks-side lanes after midnight.
What to watch for
- Chain-snatching at Sepolia metro station — it was one of the stations worked by the gang broken up with 21 arrests over 129 cases
- Street robbery and burglary, reported in crime coverage of Sepolia together with Kolonos and Kato Patisia, with DIAS patrols the stated response
- The unlit ground alongside the railway corridor, currently a works site for the four-track and undergrounding project
Staying here
Fine to stay in if you have a reason — family, a long stay, a cheap month — and want a plain Athenian neighbourhood on the metro. As a short holiday base it just costs you time and gives you nothing.
Reputation against reality. Rick Steves forum regulars mostly ask why a tourist would come here at all, which is the right question; the answers are basketball pilgrimage and cheap rent. It is not one of the districts named in the 2026 police plan.
