An estimated 10,477 people live there: the 2021 census counts the surrounding community as a whole, and this is its share by area.

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate of Greece as a whole and every doubling of the rate costs the same points, so any two places compare directly. How the scores are made

What Agios Nikolaos is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkThe note names what changes after dark and where; by day the usual precautions apply.

A dense district built around the church and square of Agios Nikolaos, with Acharnon as its commercial spine and its own ISAP station on Line 1. It was middle-class; today its cheap older flats and good transport make it a lower-cost residential district. It functions as a working local high street: bakeries, phone shops, international grocers, the Saturday market. Very few outsiders come here on purpose.

After dark

The square and the Acharnon shops thin out after closing and the area is named in the current police plan as a drug-trafficking focus, so the late-night picture on and around the square is the district's real problem.

What to watch for

  • Plateia Agiou Nikolaou, named in the Hellenic Police 2026 plan as a drug-dealing spot alongside Victoria, Attiki and Amerikis
  • Chain-snatching at Agios Nikolaos ISAP station — one of the stations worked by the gang broken up with 21 arrests
  • Acharnon after shop-closing, largely shuttered with little footfall
  • Unlicensed street vending and crowding around the Acharnon market days

Staying here

Not a place to book. Line 1 puts you at Omonia quickly and the flats are cheap, but you would be staying in a police priority sector with nothing for a visitor in exchange.

Reputation against reality. Note the name clash: there is also a Plateia Agiou Nikolaou in the separate Municipality of Acharnes, well north of the city, which appears in unrelated police reports. The square in the Athens petty-crime plan is this one, off Acharnon street.
