Ydraiika scores 39 out of 100 for property crime — above-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 3,429 people at 13,556 people per km².
The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.
The historic heart of the modern city, between Akti Miaouli and Sachtouri, G. Theotoki and Thoukydidou, laid out on the Kleanthis and Schaubert grid for settlers from Hydra who arrived from 1838. Agios Nikolaos, the sailors' church, opened in 1844. It runs up to the port, so this is where ferry passengers actually walk, and where old Troumba stood around Filonos and Notara.
The port frontage is busy round the clock, but the blocks behind Akti Miaouli thin out fast. At about 05:00 on 30 August 2026, two police officers at a port bus stop were beaten by four men who fled by car: precisely the early-ferry hour.
The most convenient district for a dawn sailing, a flat five to fifteen minutes to most gates. Book on the quieter inland streets, and take a taxi rather than walk before dawn.
Reputation against reality. Troumba's red-light reputation is a museum piece: the licensed houses around Filonos and Notara, inside the block bounded by Akti Miaouli, Filellinon, Kolokotroni and Sotiros Dios, were closed on 12 September 1973 and the area is now ordinary and partly gentrifying.
