It borders Kaminia to the east, Palaia Kokkinia to the north, Papastratos to the west along the OSE lines, and Gouva tou Vavoula and Paliatzidika to the south along the ISAP lines. This was the labour centre of Piraeus: the Retsina brothers' textile mill, the last of five, and the Kerani tobacco works, once Greece's third largest.

  Palaia KokkiniaΠαλαιά Κοκκινιά · above-average crimeA refugee neighbourhood in the north of the municipality, bordered by Nikaia to the north, Lefka to the south, Agios Ioannis Rentis to the east and Agia Sofia to the west. Farmers settled it in the mid-19th century; Greek and Armenian refugees from Smyrna transformed it after 1922. Leoforos Thivon runs through it. Three squares organise it: Agios Sotiras, Neraida and the cemetery square.

It sits between Levka to the east and Kopi to the west. Long the most run-down quarter in the city, it is now the site of the largest regeneration in Piraeus: the factory is offices, with a hotel, museum and residences planned.

The name comes from the earthwork redoubts Karaiskakis threw up here in 1827. The population is mixed: families from the Mani around Agios Dimitrios, descendants of Asia Minor refugees around Agios Panteleimon and the Ypapanti church, founded 1924.

  Neo FaliroΝέο Φάληρο · above-average crimeThe eastern edge of Piraeus on Faliro bay, bounded by Thivon to the north and Dodekanisou toward Kaminia, cut off from the sea by the elevated Poseidonos avenue. A stadium district: Karaiskaki, home of Olympiacos, and the SEF arena, plus the ISAP station and the tram terminus. Most visitors come for a match, a concert or the tram.

Theotoki and Thoukydidou, laid out on the Kleanthis and Schaubert grid for settlers from Hydra who arrived from 1838. Agios Nikolaos, the sailors' church, opened in 1844. It runs up to the port, so this is where ferry passengers actually walk, and where old Troumba stood around Filonos and Notara.

Prosperous, well-policed, full of locals rather than tourists, and walkable to Dimotiko Theatro metro.

  KaminiaΚαμίνια · above-average crimeOld kiln country between Piraeus Street and Thivon, next to Neo Faliro and the electric railway, 2.5km from the centre. Streets are named after Aegean islands, after the island labourers who came for the ceramics works and stayed. Plateia Nikou Legaki is the meeting point, Agiou Eleftheriou the commercial axis. Professionals priced out of Neo Faliro have been moving in.

  Agia SofiaΑγία Σοφία · above-average crimeKnown to everyone as Maniatika, after the families from the Mani who settled here from the 1880s to be near dock work. A steep working-class grid of low 1950s-70s houses above the port, with Palamidiou as the commercial spine and the 1898-1902 Agia Sofia church at its heart. It borders Tabouria to the west and Palaia Kokkinia to the east. Maniatika metro station opened on 10 October 2022, pulling the district closer to the city.

  KopiΚοπή · above-average crimeA small district on the seam between the municipalities of Piraeus and Keratsini-Drapetsona, bounded by Kalokairinou, Anapafseos, Psaron and Anchialou, with Tabouria to the north, Drapetsona to the south, Papastratos to the east and Keratsini to the west. It is named after the army clothing factory that has occupied around 40 acres here since 1937, and was the site of a resistance battle to stop the Germans destroying it. Otherwise: small blocks, small squares, a school.

Its axes are Leoforos Grigoriou Lampraki and Tzavella, which climbs toward Kastella hill, meeting at the church. One of the most heavily populated parts of the city, with many students because the University of Piraeus sits alongside it at Karaoli & Dimitriou 80.

Theotoki, Klisovis/Karpathou and St. Dragoumi, touching Chatzikyriakeio, Ydraiika, Peiraiki and Freattyda. Settled first by islanders from Hydra and the Dodecanese, then after 1922 by refugees from Gallipoli in Eastern Thrace, who gave it its name and built the Agia Paraskevi church. Three squares anchor it: Serfiotou, Pigada and the large, family-heavy Karpathou.

  PigadaΠηγάδα · above-average crimeOne of the oldest neighbourhoods, on a low hill near the middle of the peninsula facing Kallipoli, named for a large well sunk when the first drinking-water cisterns were installed. It was grazing land with three mills before it was built up along Dexameni and Chatzikyriakou toward Agios Vasileios. The old reservoir ground is now a planted square. Its real function today is a junction linking Marina Zea, Chatzikyriakeio, central Piraeus and the harbour.

  TerpsitheaΤερψιθέα · above-average crimeOne of the most central neighbourhoods, named for its square at the crossing of Iroon Polytechniou, which runs up to Chatzikyriakeio, and 2as Merarchias, which runs from the central port down to Zea. That makes it the hinge between the ferry terminals and the marina, with Gladstonos and Palaiologou as near-pedestrian side lanes. Ordinary Piraeus: apartment blocks, offices, bakeries. The municipality has commissioned a redesign of the square.

  VryoniΒρυώνη · above-average crimeA small central district at the start of Iroon Polytechniou, wedged between Terpsithea and Ydraiika and running toward Freattyda, with Sachtouri as its boundary. It sits above Akti Miaouli by the port exhibition hall, minutes from the cruise and ferry frontage. The name comes from Ioannis Vryonis, a merchant who arrived from the Russian east in the late 19th century and built a landmark house with a gothic clock dome. Today it is purely residential with shops and offices.

Barely built on until the 1960s, when families from Kallipoli, Chatzikyriakeio and Freattyda moved out onto the new seafront; it meets Kallipoli at Filikis Etaireias. Akti Themistokleous is the point: fish tavernas, kafeneia and small bars along the water. The official Athens guide sends visitors here for seafood, naming Margaro, Yperokeanio and Ta Vrachia tis Peiraikis.

  ChatzikyriakeioΧατζηκυριάκειο · above-average crimeThe north-west shoulder of the peninsula, bounded by Thoukydidou to the east and G. Theotoki to the south. It is institutional as much as residential: the Naval Academy since 1885, the Chatzikyriakeio orphanage since 1889, the regional library, and the Zoodochos Pigi church built by refugees from Eastern Thrace who settled after 1924. Chatzikyriakou is the largest boulevard in Piraeus. Visitors come for the seafood tavernas along the shore.

  FreattydaΦρεαττύδα · above-average crimeA seaward wedge on the south-east of the peninsula, bounded by Kantharou to the north and Sachtouri to west and south, with Terpsithea above and Zea harbour alongside. It holds Tzaneio, the city's main hospital, the Maritime Museum, the submarine Papanikolis and the town beach moved here in the early 1960s. The municipality upgraded that beach in 2026 and neighbouring Votsalakia in July 2025, adding LED lighting and 24-hour free pedestrian access.
