Palaia Kokkinia property crime

Παλαιά Κοκκινιά · district

39/100

Palaia Kokkinia scores 39 out of 100 for property crimeabove-average crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 10,636 people at 13,556 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Palaia Kokkinia is actually like

Fine by day, care after darkNormal by day and worth visiting. What changes after dark is specific and avoidable rather than general.

A refugee neighbourhood in the north of the municipality, bordered by Nikaia to the north, Lefka to the south, Agios Ioannis Rentis to the east and Agia Sofia to the west. Farmers settled it in the mid-19th century; Greek and Armenian refugees from Smyrna transformed it after 1922. Leoforos Thivon runs through it. Three squares organise it: Agios Sotiras, Neraida and the cemetery square.

After dark

Lived-in and ordinary around the squares; the through-route along Thivon and the blocks behind it are darker and less overlooked. The documented 2024-25 juvenile robbery cases targeted elderly residents at home, a residents' problem rather than a visitors' one.

Staying here

There is essentially no visitor accommodation and no direct link to the ferry gates. Not a place to book, and not a place to arrive at 2am with luggage looking for an address.

Reputation against reality. Kokkinia carries a reputation from the 1980s-90s that its own residents dispute; recent press coverage of the district is nostalgic rather than alarmed.
