Portes violent crime

Πόρτες · district

46/100

Portes scores 46 out of 100 for violent crimeaverage crime, on a scale where 50 is the average for Greece. It is home to about 2,292 people at 618 people per km².

The score is absolute, not a ranking: 50 is the offence rate for Greece as a whole, 100 the safest end of the scale and 0 the least safe, and every doubling of the rate costs the same number of points wherever you are. Regional units are scored from Eurostat's police-recorded offence rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Greece publishes nothing finer, so municipalities and districts share out their region's measured rate by how built-up they are and by documented local reporting — treat those two levels as an estimate, not a count of reported crime.

What Portes is actually like

Ordinary city precautionsNo specific problem on record beyond what any dense city centre has.

The old southern entrance to the city — Portes means the gates — a name that survives alongside Pratsika, after the Epirot family of Sideris Pratsikas who held property here. It is a small inner-southern quarter on the approach into the centre, built up with older houses and modest blocks and carrying traffic in and out. There is no visitor interest beyond the name's history. Against Vlatero and Tabahana on the old-city threshold it is flatter and more trafficked; against the southern districts beyond it is closer in and better connected. It appears in none of the 2024-2026 police or press crime reporting.

After dark

An approach road quarter, so traffic continues late and the main axis stays lit; the side streets are quiet and thinly lit. No documented incidents, patrol priorities or burglary listings name Portes.

What to watch for

  • Crossing the busy approach road on foot at night
  • Quiet thinly lit side streets off the main axis

Staying here

Workable if you find something cheap and central, with the advantage of being on the southern, ferry-facing side of the city. You would still take a taxi to the South Port gates for an Italy sailing.
